Peaches are probably the most rewarding fruit tree. Nothing beats a fresh ripe juicy peach! Especially when the juice runs down your arm and off your elbo just before for your dog jump up and nocks the peach from your hand. However, peaches are not the best fruit to grown in your backyard. This said everyone needs to try them, just don't be discouraged if the tree doesn't make its 5th birthday.
The peach has several problems. The first is sensitivity to cold temperature, or cold hardyness. In the Mid-West we get great flavor on peaches but only figure they will live 18-15 years. In general 20 years is great for a peach tree in production. Georga on the other hand doesn't have the winter injury problems, but the flavor is not as wonderful either.
If the tree survies your climate the next hurdle is having a good peach crop. The peach in general does not like cold temeratures as i said. but the blossoms are even more sensetive. As a
homeowner you could notice that you don't get many fruit untill the tree reaches 7-10 feet tall. This is contributed to spring frost. It can also be caused by cold temeratures in the winter killing back the buds. However, frosts are most responsible. Variety selection is the only way to combat this issue. Certain varieties are able to withstand the frost better to leave hardy blossoms to produce the best peaches. read more
