Wildlife issues range from mice to Deer. Each varmint has a similar motive and that is food. It is important to understand that these animals see our labor as food.
One interesting point my father and I were talking about today is that we no longer use rabbit guards in our orchard. 10 Years ago rabbit guards were always used. When we started planting the high density orchards (3-6ft apart) they became a huge expense. I can honestly say we have no more and maybe fewer damage to the trunks than we did when we used the guards. What do we learn from this? We can work hard to manage wildlife but they will find food to eat, somewhere.
By far deer are the most detrimental to the survival of a tree.
Birds, Turkeys and Racoon's are the most hungry for fruits; peaches, cherries, apples, blueberries....
Rabbits and mice nibble on the lower branches they can reach from on top of snow or will nibble the bark around the truck girdling the tree.
Any one of these issues is most likely accompanied by the others. The control is a never ending battle.
